It’s been a long road to where she is today, though. After first breaking out in France a decade ago as the runner-up on Nouvelle Star—the Gallic version of American Idol—she signed with a major label and released her self-titled debut album in 2015. After facing disappointing sales, she quietly started her own label (humorously called I Have No Fucking Idea) and released a series of EPs that showcased her remarkable range as an artist, from piano-driven ballads to techno-driven club bangers to alt-rock anthems. And now, with her sophomore album, Mental, Yseult has packaged that entire journey into one record: an exhilarating adventure through her eclectic sonic universe, from the whispery bedroom pop of opener “Petit <3" to the swooning reggaeton of "Gasolina" to the raucous hyperpop of "Bitch You Could Never."

I say “a very busy week”, but really, it’s been a very busy year for Yseult. The French musician’s distinctive blend of variété française – a traditional chanson genre best known worldwide for the music of Edith Piaf – with contemporary pop production and poignant lyrics exploring mental health and body image has been gaining a following far beyond her native shores for years now. (Her status as a beloved fashion model helped: she walked the runways of Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga, and with the help of stylist Jonathan Huguet, she delivered one of the year’s most dramatic looks in a modern update of Christian Dior’s “New Look” at Cannes.) All of that seemed to culminate with her breathtaking performance at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, her voice shaking the rafters of the Stade de France as she belted out the moving “My Way.”

When I connect with Yseult, she’s in the middle of a very busy week. “It’s stressful,” she says from the back of an Uber in New York. (The day before, she gave a killer performance of her hit “Suicide” on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.) “But I’m so grateful, so blessed, and so happy.” It turns out she’s actually FaceTimed while en route to the airport with her squad; she turns her iPhone toward them to smile and wave. Soon, they’ll be in Rio de Janeiro, where she’ll join Karol G’s headline performance at Rock in Rio to perform their viral hit “Alibi,” alongside Pabllo Vittar and Sevdaliza. “They’re the strongest women ever,” she says, flashing a big smile. “And it’s rocking all over the world!”
