In June 2019, my teenage niece and nephew, Ruby and Hart Campbell, were killed by a drunk driver traveling 90 miles per hour near the desert town of Joshua Tree, 133 miles east of Los Angeles. They were with their parents, on a trip to check out what they hoped would be a vacation home in one of their favorite places on earth. Ruby and Hart loved climbing the boulders at Joshua Tree State Park, and her sister Gail and brother-in-law Colin loved the surreal scenery and the peacefulness, away from their busy lives in Los Angeles. All of those dreams ended in a matter of minutes. Ruby died on impact, Hart died shortly afterward.

Michelle Park, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and a clinical instructor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The three of us were doing burpees. It wasn’t pretty, but there we were: three sisters, dancing around in makeshift gyms at the height of the pandemic. Every morning, we’d turn on our favorite YouTube channel, FaceTime, and do squats. Like many sisters, we had our ups and downs, our rivalries and resentments. For decades, we were there for each other, vying for attention, gossiping. We sent birthday gifts and celebrated holidays. We were mad at each other, and we laughed. We grew closer when our dad was dying, putting aside petty grievances and making tough decisions together. And again when our mom died. I always thought that was the most important thing: That in the worst of times, we would trust each other. Only the worst was yet to come.

Ultimately, Korean moisturizers can vary in their formulations in terms of aesthetics (like fast absorption) as well as their sheer pleasure (like a breathable, cloud-like texture). While these products may appeal to certain skin types—those with oily skin, for example, may prefer a light, cloud-like texture—they’re more about the pleasure of application. Ultimately, though, “I don’t believe that Korean moisturizers are better than American moisturizers or vice versa,” says Dr. Chang. “The choice of moisturizer is personal and subjective, and can also change over time, with age, and with the seasons.” And, like many skin-care formulas, Korean moisturizers aren’t perfect—so while their unique ingredients and formulations may work for you now, it may not be worth avoiding a product that’s worked for you, regardless of where it came from.
