Rae's style savvy is what has helped her bridge the gap between her younger and older fanbases. Around 2021, coinciding with her first foray into music, Rae began upgrading her personal style with the help of Law Roach (her long-retired image architect) and her current stylist, Ryan Hastings. While I can't say I paid much attention to her single "Obsessed," I did notice her wardrobe of fun tank tops, candy-colored short shorts, and bold formal wear. I first learned about Rae when I joined TikTok at the start of the pandemic—along with everyone else born before 2000, it seems. She was already the reigning queen (in fact, she shared the crown with Charli D'Amelio). I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. With her bright smile, Disney Channel, and almost-maniacal dance videos, I assumed she was "for the kids." But in the years since, Rae has grown up and adapted her image accordingly. Her choice to control her image is fashion.
In the weeks leading up to the release of her Lost EP, AR, TikTok sensation Addison Rae started catching my eye with her outfits. Whether she was running for coffee in Vivienne Westwood strappy heels or heading to Pilates in an almost Y2K-inflected mix of pointy-toe flats and leg warmers, Rae was channeling the 2000s pop diva vibe that had been absent from current culture for far too long. Now, more than a year later, Rae is well on her way to becoming the star her wardrobe has always signaled. Following her (really good) single “Diet Pepsi,” she hit the 2024 MTV VMAs red carpet in a bizarre bra and panties set, complete with a tulle and feather pleated skirt by Miss Claire Sullivan and styled by Dara Allen. It was a cross between Swan Lake and a Las Vegas stripper. It was pure, unrepentant pop star behavior.
