Last year, in another twist of fate, the pair were offered a pop-up retail space in Malibu. “The concept was to have some florals but to show more of our design point of view,” says Woods. Pretend Malibu’s handpicked curation of treasures, including art by Max Jansons, glassware by Shun Kumagai and jewelry by En Studio along with fragrances by Persephenie, also proved a hit. So, when a space came up in a historic Old Hollywood building in which to house their blossoming design business, they jumped on it. Named Pretend by Appointment, the Spanish revival meets surrealist atelier opened in March and serves as a showcase for their design aesthetic, florals and favorite things. Laid out over two levels, the duo painted the ground floor a deep, Majorelle blue, installed a plush, matching blue carpet, a pair of Rachel Shillander mother-of-pearl sculptural chairs positioned in front of the flickering fireplace, and a large stone sculpture by Beverly Pepper. “It felt very iconic and faded here and so when we were designing the space, we wanted to do something really vibey,” says Woods. For the upstairs room, with its vaulted, beamed ceiling, faux-Romanesque fresco and Juliet balcony, they selected muted coral walls, a Fortuny chandelier, and ceiling-height Australian tree fern.
With the space now ready to receive guests, they will be hosting on Saturday the first in what they hope will be a series of intimate events–starting with friends Rick Van Streain Low and Malu Byrne, cofounders of the New York-based jewelry line En Studio. They will also be hosting private appointments on Friday and Sunday, which can be requested over email. Founded in 2019, the brand already had deep ties to Los Angeles, having initially launched at one of the city’s most notable fine jewelry boutiques, August. “We have a clientele out here, and what Ezra and Michael have done is created an environment that very much mirrors our home studio in the Catskills,” says Lowe. “It’s much more of a personal experience.” As for Woods, he says the elemental quality of En Studio’s jewelry resonates with their clientele–the Papal earrings and hair pins in blush rose quartz , labradorite and lapis, and asymmetric stacking rings in a combination of precious metals like green gold and Venetian brown gold proving particularly popular. “The forms are very liquid and easy to wear. They kind of feel accidental and mannered at the same time,” Woods says.
Woods and Woodcock also called on their longtime friend, perfumer Persephenie Lea to create an incense installation. The result was a blue azulene ash sculpture holding her Himalayan Juniper laced Purify Powder blend, timed to burn for six hours (the duration of the event). “One of us is into timing,” Woods jokes. “So when the incense is done, party over.” Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, kicked off the impending Coronation celebrations in truly British style on Thursday—in the pub. Not only that, she wore red, white and blue for the occasion. Kate and William popped into the Dog & Duck in Soho, London, at lunchtime to hear how the hospitality industry is prepping for events to formally mark the start of King Charles III’s reign. Appropriately, the pair took the Elizabeth line—named for William’s late grandmother—to Tottenham Court Road.
