From Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and Jared Leto’s Choupette impersonations to Kim Kardashian’s mesmerizing pearl-on-pearl moment, no one could be accused of playing it safe at the Met Gala 2023. Honoring the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, the gala was a visual feast of feathers, tulle, crystals, and fake whiskers. Naturally, the beauty looks were just as arresting. Jessica Chastain, known for her signature red hair, surprised us all with a platinum blonde wig to the point where she was almost unrecognizable. Dramatic hair transformations defined the night: actor Marion Cotillard debuted a pale pink bowl cut, while models Cara Delevingne, Amber Valletta, and Anok Yai opted for micro fringes and mullet-inspired shag cuts (Delevingne also ditched her classic blonde tresses for bleached turquoise).

Half ponytails are everywhere right now. A versatile style that offers the best of both worlds, it’s had a revival in recent weeks thanks to a number of influential celebrities. An easy trend to recreate, it’s the perfect hairstyle to take your look from day to night. Jennifer Lopez is the latest celebrity to show off her take on the trend—although Lopez is no stranger to the half-up half-down look. (While more recently she has favored a glamazon blow dry or slicked-back updo, the ever-glowy singer has worn bouncy half ponytails in the past for shows and events alike.)

Stepping out at the Met Gala 2023 (her first ever!), Doja Cat instantly delivered one of the evening’s most Internet-breaking moments by channeling the one and only Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat. “It makes no sense for anyone to go as Karl’s cat more than Doja Cat,” says Brett Alan Nelson, her creative director and stylist who refers to the artist by her given name, Amala Zandile Dlamini. The pair spent six months working with Oscar de La Renta co-creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia on Doja’s completely hand-beaded gown featuring a face-framing hood punctuated by a pair of cat ears. “Oscar and Karl were very close,” he says. “And the look feels very Oscar, but also like something Chanel could do at a couture show.”
