San Diego's most famous ghost is said to haunt the Hotel del Coronado, a historic hotel that opened in 1888. That ghost is Kate Morgan, who has haunted the hotel since 1892, the year she checked in (supposedly) to wait for her philandering husband—who never showed up. Four days later, a distraught (and pregnant) Kate was found dead at the foot of the outdoor stairs leading to Coronado Beach, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Her ghost is often seen on the beach in a black lace dress as well as in the room she stayed in (Room 3327), where her initials are said to appear randomly on the ceiling.
It's impossible not to be drawn to Chicago's Congress Hotel: its imposing presence dominates Michigan Avenue, beckoning with the promise of late-19th-century grandeur inside. But once you step inside, you may be surprised: its grand ballrooms, impressive staircases and grand restaurants are eerily empty; even local ghost tour operators describe the interior as "very creepy". Perhaps that's because dozens of ghosts - many of them believed to have committed suicide - are said to haunt the 100-year-old hotel. Some of the most notorious hauntings include that of a Spanish-American War veteran who shot himself on the eve of his wedding in 1900, and a depressed mother who pushed her two young children and herself out of a 12th-floor window in 1939.
With its Gatsby-pink facade and white-sand beach, the Don CeSar may not seem all that creepy at first. But the more you learn about this grand seaside hotel, the more intriguing it becomes. The hotel was built in 1928 to honor “Lucinda,” the lost love of real estate tycoon Thomas Rowe, who died in the hotel lobby in 1940. Apparently, Rowe is still searching the hotel grounds for his beloved Lucinda—and some guests even say he may have found her: a ghostly couple has been spotted on the grounds. It’s no wonder it’s considered one of the most romantic—if not haunted—hotels in the state.
