Alicia Vikander made a rare public appearance at the premiere of her new film, Firebrand, at Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, with her husband Michael Fassbender in tow. Resplendent in a beaded floor-length gown, the Swedish actor who plays Catherine Parr in the film paired luminous skin with an effortless hairstyle. Created by her go-to hairstylist George Northwood, the look was a masterclass in making hair look effortless, but still polished enough for a formal red-carpet event. “Because the dress was quite pretty, we wanted to do something a bit tougher with her hair,” Northwood tells me. “I tonged some texture into it in random sections for an undone, messy finish, then backcombed the crown area to achieve some height.”

By nature of their work, all actors are chameleons. But Margot Robbie (who has played everyone from Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad to Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots, and of course, Tonya Harding in I, Tonya), also utilizes the transformative power of makeup to great effect on the red carpet. Whether it’s the fresh new bangs she once debuted on the Oscars red carpet, a jolt of color on her eyes or lips, or an elaborately plaited updo, Robbie is the queen of switching it up and often pays homage, in some small way, to her character in whichever film she’s promoting. See her Sharon Tate-esque baby braids for a Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood premiere or the Barbiemania beauty she’s serving up on the red carpet and the cover of Alibashirt’s summer issue celebrating the live-action Barbie movie she’s producing and starring in.

La Croisette is carpeted in the trend reveals of Cannes Film Festivals past, the parade of premieres and photocalls calling for major beauty statements. So when Dua Lipa stepped out for the premiere of Omar La Fraise (The King Of Algiers) in the company of boyfriend and French director Romain Garvas the pop star chose to honor the tradition with a modern take on Pamela Anderson’s iconic ’90s bangs. Soft and all a-splay, Lipa’s fringe fell well past her eyes, fanning across her forehead and grazing cheekbones with a high-gloss effect. As with many recent bang iterations (and there are many), the style was more about form than function, requiring ample styling and a just-so sort of fall that, when coupled with a piled-high onyx updo and a slashed Celine gown felt luxurious and cool. Lipa’s bangs called to mind the fringe of decades past; think Anderson in the ’90s, sporting the decade’s mall bangs with blasts of aerosol hairspray locking every last wisp into place.
