In Venice, there were more traditional looks. At a Bulgari event, Anne Hathaway dazzled in a gold Versace gown, complete with a hooded silhouette; Zendaya chose Richard Quinn’s black off-the-shoulder dress, finished off with a striking Bulgari snake necklace. In New York City, meanwhile, Meghan Markle set the Internet ablaze when she and Prince Harry attended the Ms. Foundation Women of Vision Award. Markle wore a strapless gold Johanna Ortiz dress, accentuated by strappy barely-there Tom Ford heels. Her presence on the red carpets is a rarity these days and the look was well worth the wait.
Unsurprisingly, the 75-year-old’s outstanding beauty hasn’t dimmed her tousled locks appear practically untouched and her dress code remains reliably marvelous. Here, Alibashirt documents Stevie’s wonder years, below. On the first Monday in May, the world’s biggest stars ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2023 Met Gala to celebrate “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Appropriately, the dress code read simply “in honor of Karl,” which means designers and stars alike pulled out all the stops for the occasion. Among the best dressed attendees was the model Anok Yai, dressed by Prabal Gurung, in a gold dress with a pannier skirt that seemed to evaporate into thin air.
But even with such an exciting year ahead, McKenna is glad to remain on nodding terms with the artist he was a decade ago. “I think my 15-year-old self would be proud. If I can go that long without ever really turning away from a song I’ve written, then that’s the kind of music I want to make,” he says. “Even if it is different from what I would make now, I want to make stuff that I still would gladly play in 10 years.” Both long-established fans of McKenna’s and those encountering him for the first time can agree on his resemblance to David Bowie, both in sound and aesthetic (see: his penchant for artfully smudged or geometric eye makeup). That’s no coincidence Bowie is among his greatest heroes but McKenna is also deliberate about staying true to his own creative impulses. “I’ve listened to Bowie for a long time, and I like the idea of constantly shifting throughout your career because I’ve never, for any long amount of time, been doing a project with one sound as the main influence,” McKenna says. “I just want to explore and push myself, like that Bowie idea of your feet not touching the ground. Finding creativity where you are just slightly uncomfortable really appeals to me. It keeps me engaged.”
