As Betsy Stewart on the CBS drama As the World Turns. Ryan joined the show's cast shortly after making her feature film debut in George Cukor's Rich and Famous (1981). Attending the London premiere of When Harry Met Sally… with Dennis Quaid, whom she would marry in 1991. (The two had appeared together in the 1987 sci-fi comedy Innerspace.) Back in January, the 2024 Golden Globes kicked off a thrilling and tumultuous awards season with a bang: Jo Koy ruffled feathers; Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet looked like they were plucked straight from a '90s romantic comedy; Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez helped lip readers make their mark in the world of business; and virtually everyone who would win an Oscar in the main categories—from Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy to Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Justine Triet, Billie Eilish, Hayao Miyazaki, and the producers of Best Picture winner Oppenheimer—took home their first Golden Globes. There was also the allure of all the glamorous TV nominees—the casts of Succession, The Bear, Beef, and The Crown were all in attendance—as well as a raucous, laid-back atmosphere that set this star-studded celebration apart from its more serious rivals.
After a disastrous stint with comedian Jo Koy — one that left many viewers wondering whether the show should go hostless in the future — the Golden Globes have named a new host for 2025: Emmy-nominated stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser. "I'm absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes," she said in a statement. “This is one of my favorite nights on television, and now I have a front-row seat. The Golden Globes are not only a big night for television and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God, I hope so.) It’s a fun but challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable, and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who are also probably drunk sitting next to their recent exes). Some of my all-time favorite jokes have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues when Tina, Amy, or Ricky say exactly the things we all didn’t know we needed to hear. I just hope to continue that long-standing tradition (which could also get me canceled). This is truly the dream job.”
Among the current frontrunners for best drama are the Colman Domingo-starring three-and-a-half-hour prison drama Sing Sing; the Ralph Fiennes-starring papal thriller Conclave; the divisive three-and-a-half-hour immigration epic The Brutalist; the experimental literary adaptation Nickel Boys; Steve McQueen's upcoming Blitz; the massive sci-fi Dune: Part Two; and a rousing new take on August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. Meanwhile, in the best comedy or musical category, expect the Palme d'Or-winning Anora to compete with the likes of Emilia Pérez's crazy gangster musical Wicked, the thrilling Saturday Night, and Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin's touching buddy comedy A Real Pain.
