The hooded gown has been Hollywood’s new favorite dress to wear on the red carpet. This spring, stars like Anne Hathaway, Jenna Ortega, and Michaela Coel have all slipped into slinky, floor-length dresses that come complete with a covered-up hood. The striking evening look was first pioneered by late designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Azzedine Alaīa in the 1980s, but it feels just as fresh today. Leave it to Kylie Jenner, however, to give the rising trend her own twist while out and about in Paris last night. Forget the hooded gown Jenner made the case for the hooded mini instead.
Jenner, who touched down in the City of Lights to attend Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” performance, hit the streets in a white hooded mini dress from Ferragamo’s spring 2023 collection. As seen on the runway, the white one-shouldered frock from designer Maximilan Davis has an attached white hood that’s wrapped around the head like a scarf. But cut above the knee, the hemline shows more skin than your standard hooded gown it feels a dash more fun and youthful. It’s more raucous party-ready than gala-ready. Given the look is such a statement on its own, Jenner accessorized it minimally with black pointed pumps and a tiny white mini bag, both also Ferragamo.
The only rule is that there’s absolutely no rules. “I’ve covered a bag in safety pins, graffitied them, burnt them, added studs, weighed them down heavily with keychains: to anyone else it probably looks like I’ve ruined the bag but to me it’s what makes them one of a kind and special,” adds Shipton. The personalized bag also subverts status in an interesting way, especially when the item at hand is worth thousands of dollars. That Birkin bag? Or even a Margiela or Balenciaga? It says a lot more, in much more of an interesting way, when it’s tattered up and covered in charms, rosaries and ribbons.
