Perhaps most impressive, however, is the renovated ground floor. Caring has chosen to open it up completely – the Living Room opens into the Dining Room, which then opens into the Conservatory – so that it all “hits you at once” as you enter the George Stubbs-lined foyer. It is this floor – now flooded with daylight – where the Mark’s Club silver service will be realised in its most perfect form: think Imperial Beluga and côte de boeuf paired with fresh Champagne and aged Claret, then a Shropshire Blue and sauterne board. Caring concludes that Birley “created a home” when he opened the Mark’s Club – a home that makes visitors feel like they’ve “stepped back in time”. Caring’s particular genius? Combining the club’s traditional charm with its contemporary polish so deftly.
As you step through the door, you’re greeted by a newly acquired George Stubbs painting above the Edwardian clock familiar to longtime members of the Mark Club. Old Master works have been a staple of the décor since the club opened in the 1970s; Mark Birley’s father, Oswald Birley, was also a respected artist, known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill and many others. The adjoining lounge embodies Mark Birley’s “relaxed” yet “mixed” style, as Caring puts it, where guests can linger over Bellinis in Murano glasses and vintage martinis before or after dinner. The fireplace above was discovered during the renovation and now anchors the room.
Mark’s Club’s ground-floor dining room will be a bastion of silverware in the heart of Mayfair, decked out in white tablecloths and black ties. In a nod to fine dining traditions, many dishes will be finished at the table: think boneless Dover Soles and seared Crêpe Suzettes in front of guests. The most significant change to Mark’s Club is the newly installed Conservatory adjacent to the Dining Room. This light-filled oasis will be open all year round, with a fully retractable ceiling in the summer months. Not only will the full menu be available to members here, but Caring also plans to launch afternoon tea in the coming months.
