The most important step is to test your serum before using it for the first time. “Apply the serum to a small spot on your scalp for a few days to make sure there’s no irritation before applying it more widely,” says Dr. Mirmirani. “A moderate approach is best.” To that end, get comfortable with the fact that you’ll need to be consistent and patient with your use, as results can take time. As for the application itself, apply the hair growth serum to a clean scalp (though this may vary depending on the specific product). Ideally, do this on slightly damp hair, as this “can help disperse the product on the scalp and make it more porous and enhance absorption,” says Dr. Shaver. (However, she notes that an overly wet scalp will dilute your serum and potentially reduce its effectiveness.)
Meanwhile, “the goal of serums is to directly target the hair follicle by delivering compounds that can allow for better or more optimal hair growth,” says Dr. Mirmirani. These ingredients are typically not found in the diet, such as minoxidil and plant-based compounds. Topical serums tend to be better at “addressing superficial issues, such as flaky scalp and dry hair shafts, because the product can be applied directly to the site of the serum,” says Dr. Shaver, who notes that they can also provide faster benefits, such as moisturizing and soothing the scalp.
First, supplements, which are usually taken orally, can “address specific nutritional deficiencies that may be lacking in a person’s diet,” says Dr. Mirmirani. So they can be helpful for addressing systemic causes of thinning hair, such as deficiencies in certain nutrients. (For example, research has found that deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, and folate may be associated with thinning hair or slow hair growth.) But these take longer to work, since supplements “must first be metabolized by the body and distributed in the bloodstream to be beneficial,” says Dr. Shaver. And oral supplements can have more systemic side effects and interact with other medications, so it’s especially important to check with your doctor before taking supplements.
