Ohanian, founder and CEO of venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, officially announced the event in April with Gabby Thomas—just a month before Thomas broke records at the Paris Games. “Obviously, Gabby winning three gold medals definitely helped,” Ohanian said of Athlos attracting top athletes and enthusiastic crowds, “but track and field has been a big draw this year, and you see these stars getting a lot of the attention they deserve. Our job is to make sure they continue to get that between now and the next Olympics. That’s what Athlos is all about.”
While the logistics took months to finalize, the location was much easier to decide on. “I was born in Fort Greene, so I’ve always had a bias toward this great city,” Ohanian says, noting his Brooklyn roots. New York’s status as home to legendary teams like the Yankees and Knicks was another draw. “Selfishly, I wanted to do something that put Athlos right in the center of athletic excellence.” Last night, in front of a crowd that included Paris 2024 breakout fan Flavor Flav, Olympic medalist Sanya Richards-Ross, and a large group of local high school students—many of them young track and field athletes—Athlos hosted six races: 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 800m, and 1,500m. The winners, including Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (100m hurdles) and American Brittany Brown, who beat Thomas in the 200m, were crowned, literally. Instead of medals, each runner-up was presented with a sterling silver Tiffany & Co. crown, custom-made for the event. The total prize money was more than $500,000, with the winners taking home $60,000 each—an unprecedented sum for women's track and field.
Married to tennis legend Serena Williams since 2017, Ohanian has seen the pay gap between men's and women's sports firsthand, and has watched it change. "Because of Billie [Jean King], and because of Serena and Venus, [tennis] is now a very well-paid sport for women. Golf is another sport that's catching up in terms of pay. But athletics is still very, very, very behind." The night took a decidedly raucous turn when Megan Thee Stallion took the stage and performed a series of power shots (often acknowledging other hot girls in the crowd).
