“Establishing an effective skincare routine is all about choosing the right products at the right time and applying them in the right order. You probably already know your general skin type, but when it comes to serums and treatments, choose ones that will target your specific concerns. Maybe you get more breakouts when the weather gets more humid? Is your skin oilier than usual? Maybe you have a persistent dry patch that seems to appear out of nowhere? Or patches of pigmentation? Figuring out exactly what your skin needs first is key when choosing the right products to layer.”

Take a look at your beauty cabinet and chances are you have a few mainstays in your skincare arsenal. Hyaluronic acid is the ultimate moisturizer. Retinol is the must-have anti-aging ingredient. Vitamin C is the essential brightener. SPF is non-negotiable. But is there a right or wrong way to apply them? How can we layer them to maximize their benefits? Marcia Kilgore, head of direct-to-consumer and membership-based Beauty Pie, knows. As the founder of no less than three brands that cater to all your skincare needs (Bliss, Soaper Duper, and now Beauty Pie), any advice she imparts is likely to ring true. So how do you do it? And which key ingredients should we skip in our step-by-step routines? Here’s Kilgore’s definitive guide.

“Once you have the products that make up your routine, you should start with the lightest to the heaviest. Start by applying the thinnest, fastest-absorbing product first and layer the next thickest on top, then the next, so that the thickest formula is on top (followed by sunscreen and/or tinted SPF). As a general rule, apply your products in this order: cleanser, toner/essence, treatment/mask, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, oil, SPF. Sunscreen should always be applied last, and the only thing you should apply over sunscreen is powder, concealer, or foundation.”
